Sequencial Image

Sequencial Images

In this post I would like to introduce to you a very interesting technic of taking a picture. For those who are into photography, for sure this will be something different than just simple photo taken by DSLR. The technic I am trying to explain to you, takes your photography possibilities to a higher level. In the end of the day, we are the creators of our ideas. The more work we put into our job, the more we will enjoy the outcome of it. On the top of that, people who will be watching our work will get more excited and will more enjoy the final picture. I have done some research about this technic. I have been trying to find as many informations as it possible to prove and acknowledge you about how you can improve your ideas and your work. Remember, your work is more appreciated if you appreciate your time and effort you put into your task. Right, so let's get started then...

As you can see in my post, I have uploaded an example of the sequence from the recorded scene. We can see there is a man playing on the water, enjoying it with passion and being well aware of what he is doing. I wish I could do the same things as he does, but I will put it onto my dreams list(laugh).

The Seguencial image art has been invented in 1985. One of the artists Will Eisner, who was a comics artist. The man who has decided to play with pictures and change them into art. Eisner has figured out that if he is going to put couple of layers of images taken on the same background, merge them together so the outcome will make the sequential image. As an example I have prepared for you few more pictures similar to the one above, down below.

The main trick is to in each of the scene to establish great drama story with a bit of action and essence of tension and mood.

In fact Eisner was a comics artist, but his idea of sequential image has brought new future into todays photography. In this case so many artists are still using this style of photography within their projects. That is why whole the internet is overwhelmed with thousands of pictures based on this kind of idea.

I have posted above two pictures I have found on the internet. We can clearly see that even pictures attached above, are bringing a lot of positive emotions, there is visible action and something is happening, it keeps the person looking at it with focus and curiosity.

On the one of the pictures above, we can see two boys sitting on the ground and having an conversation while one of their friends is jumping above them two on his skateboard. The character is photographed couple of times, frame by frame. The picture has been edited in the graphic software simmilar to Photoshop, GIMP, etc. In this case we can see the masking process - process of overlapped layers of the picture and in the and merged with each other. Each of the picture before editing contains different pose of the character, very important in this case is to keep camera stable by using camera tripod for example or to place the camera on the stable object to avoid any movements. The picture brings some interesting feelings to the audience. Makes them a confused but in the same time gives some very positive reaction for what they can see, and that is the most interesting fact.
It might also encourage them to obtain the same effect in their own photos, which will make them happy and proud of themselves of doing something more creative.

The other sequential image form I would like to mention is slightly different from the one I have spoke about above. This form of sequential image contains a little bit more "improved" structure.
In this form of sequence we will have a look into the actual story told on the picture. It is very similar form but the form of express is different. Let's have a look on the pictures bellow and compare one with another. The ones above this text and the other down below. You will recognise the difference between them.

These two images which have been uploaded were taken for the same purpose, to tell the story. Let's have a look on the picture above called "Chance Meeting". The difference between this picture and the other two above is simple, this photo clearly telling us a story like in the comics. Two males have met each other on the street and passing by. Each of the sequence tells it's very own story in fact that they are all connected as a one picture, one story. That is what Mr. Eisner is according to. The sequence one is followed by the other story, another sequence. That is how we humans have learned to read between the lines. You do not necessarily need to have written story on the paper but also you can read the story from the picture.

The second picture I have attached is also telling us a story. I will not particularly focus that much on the story itself as it does not really matter. What most important is, that no matter what kind of activity is visible on each of these pictures, there is one thing which connects all the dots together - time. Time is so important to think about when we look at these pictures as each of the activity shows us passage of time.

Finally, In my opinion this is a great idea of expressing your thoughts and to increase your skills level, not to limit yourself and to be open minded with your work. Creativity opens new world for you and for others. It is another reason why people should have hobbies and train their skills to use different softwares and practice. I will post soon some more informations about this technic in the next of my posts on the blog. I will try to do some more research how this technic works in video production. Stay tuned!

  1. Wikipedia is not an academic source and should not be used on your blog. Please make sure you find the original source. There is very little commentary here that explains how your research has informed your work for this week's task and how you will use this to enhance what you are doing. Why have you chosen these pieces and how does your own work relates to this? What else can you say about Duane Michals' work other than that he is trying to tell a story? As this is Digital Arts consider the technical aspects of his work and how this might inform your own work. Make sure you provide a brief introduction to the artist. Discuss the artist's background and the kind of work they create. Write as much as possible in your own words and include sources to back up what you are stating.

  2. Where are your own sequential images Pawel? You should have created a practice piece in class and a second set of sequential images with a story or more depth. You are behind on the work and need to add this as soon as possible with technical commentary and reflection.
